It definitely took me a while to figure out, but here they are:

1. It needs to be unlike anything else, special, close to their hearts

I know you mean well but trust me,

your dad has enough watches and colognes by now. 

Ditto for your mom and her 15 jewelry pieces sitting in a drawer. 

2. It needs to be something that reminds them of their homeland (This might make them cry)

As much as your parents got adapted to their lives in the US...

Nothing will ever feel the same as home. 

Just turn on an Umm Kulthum or Fairuz song and see what will happen. 

3. It has to be something that they can show off when people come visit

Let’s be honest.

Arab moms get this uncontrollable smirk on their face when somebody compliments them about their home décor or kitchen plates.

4. It is something that they can use EVERY day
